How amazing is the massive Speers Point Park Playground (also known as Lake Macquarie Variety Playground) in Speers Point?
Located in the greater Speers Point Park, it’s a dream playground for families as there is something for children of all ages. It’s got it all – climbing tower, flying fox, water play area and a scooter track are just some of the fun play equipment you’ll find in Speers Point Park.
This two-hectare park sits on the shore of Lake Macquarie enabling you to enjoy family fun with scenic views and lake breezes.
The Lake Macquarie Variety Playground runs east to west with entrances with multiple entrances depending on where you’re coming from. Best of all it’s fully fenced. However, you’ll still need to supervise your kids as it can get very busy on weekends and during school holidays.

12-metre climbing tower at Speers Point Park
The centrepiece of the playground and the attraction you’ll notice right away is the giant 12-metre climbing tower which leads to a 9-metre spiral slide.
This is guaranteed to give your kids a workout. They will need to climb up through a series of rope tunnels and platforms until they get to the top and can slide down.
Surrounding this area is a series of other fun for kids to do including climbing walls, a small slide and climbing nets.
In this area, there are also places for kids to hide. Near the climbing wall, you’ll find a tunnel where kids love to hang out so be aware in case your child disappears from sight.
Newest Play Equipment at Speers Point Park
If you’re a fan of Speers Point Park, you probably remember the timber structure located near the climbing tower. It was a hit with younger kids who could run all around it. Unfortunately, it deteriorated but now there’s new play equipment to replace it.
This elevated area has wide paths, climbing nets and slides for kids to enjoy.
Climbing Frame at Speers Point Park
Located to the north of the large tower, you’ll find a massive climbing area. This is usually quieter and is great for kids for love to climb.
Double Flying Fox at Speers Point Park
A popular attraction at Lake Macquarie Variety Playground at Speers Point Park is the double flying fox. They’re located just behind the large climbing tower and spiral slide.
There are just as many parents trying out the flying foxes as there are kids some days so if you want to have a turn #nojudgement!
Water Play Area at Speers Point Park
On warm days, the water play area is heaps of fun for kids. There are water pumps and screws to move the water. Sand surrounds this area so it’s also good for little ones who want to splash around. (Just be sure to bring a towel and a change of clothes).
Scooter Track at Speers Point Park
For a change of pace, bring the kids’ bikes or scooters and hemlets and let them practice their riding on the bike circuit.

This well thought-out track area includes road markings, road signs, roundabouts, obstacles and even a garage / parking area where they can park their scooters or bikes.
There’s plenty of seating for parents and caregivers to sit and watch kids whizz by.
Additional Play Equipment at Speers Point Park
Located on the southern end of the park you’ll find more swings and playground equipment.
It’s here that you’ll see the best lake views.
Turtle Bay Area at Speers Point Park
Near the main entrance, you’ll find Turtle Bay, a large sand area in which kids can play. It’s more shady here so great on a hot day.
The replica pirate ship is super cute for little kids to play in. Great spot for photos as well.
Sensory & Special Needs Area at Lake Macquarie Variety Playground
Built in part with funding and support from Variety, the Children’s Charity, the park is designed to accommodate special needs including a wheelchair accessible playboat, tactile orientation totem poles for people with visual impairments and a quiet zone retreat specifically designed to allow children to enjoy playing in a more passive environment.
This area is at the western end of the Lake Macquarie Variety Playground where the main entrance is located. It’s lovely to see such an inclusive park, which accommodates children of all abilities.
Eating at Lake Macquarie Variety Playground
There are tons of spots to have a picnic at Lake Macquarie Variety Playground. There are also barbecues so you can bring your own food and cook it up.
If you don’t feel like cooking, order food from the on-site cafe. Table 1 Espresso offers breakfast and lunch offerings, ice cream, coffee and yummy milkshakes. It’s also a great place for mothers’ groups to catch up for coffee or lunch.
Speers Point Variety Park has plenty of facilities available including covered picnic areas, BBQs, bubblers and bathroom facilities.
Good to Know
Address: Main entry is at Park Road, off The Esplanade, Speers Point, NSW. The best parking for the bike circuit zone is at the end of Creek Reserve Road, which is accessed via the Five Islands roundabout. You can also bike to Speers Point Park from Warners Bay.
What to Bring: Bring picnic rugs, drink bottles, snacks, sunscreen, bikes and scooters. If your kids plan to play in the water play area, bring a towel and a change of clothes.
