For a fun day out, visit Newcastle Art Gallery. The gallery includes over 5000 works of arts including Australian art from colonial days to the present as well as a giant egg in front of the building. That’s an iconic Brett Whitely sculpture called Black Totem II!
Inside the gallery, there’s lots for children to look at as the gallery features a variety of changing exhibitions.
On the second floor, there is an art corner where kids can colour. In conjunction with current exhibitions, there’s usually Kids Art Trail booklets to keep little art lovers interested.
Every Saturday and Sunday from 10:30am to 12:30pm, the Gallery offers ARTCART, a free hands-on art activity program for kids. It’s a popular activity with kids who love to create their own artistic masterpieces.
Newcastle Art Gallery also offers great school holiday workshops so be sure to check out their website. They also offer special events such as Torchlight Tours and other fun family activities.

In 2012, Reena founded Newy with Kids to share information about family-friendly Newcastle. Originally from Canada, she had no idea about what to do with her toddler and after searching unsuccessfully for a local family guide, decided to start her own. Since that time, both the toddler and Newy with Kids have grown keeping Reena busy. If you see her out and about, say hi.
